Newcastle upon Tyne is the largest city in England's north-east. It became famous as a coal port and in the 19th century became an important steel, shipbuilding and engineering centre. All of those industries plunged into decline after WWII, which left the city struggling to survive. Despite that it retains some 19th century grandeur and an impressive six bridges across the Tyne.

Geordies, as the locals are known, are fiercely proud of their city and independence and are right behind the money being poured into a substantial facelift.

The city has two universities — Newcastle and Northumbria. It also has a strong sporting tradition, being home to Premiership football team Newcastle United.

Just 20 minutes from Newcastle is Seaham Hall, the leading luxury and spa destination resort in northern England.
