My favourite place: Angela Tsun's Fremantle

10:00 AEST Thu Aug 12 2010
Angela Tsun moved from Sydney's trendy inner-city to the other side of the country to take up residence in Perth. Two years ago she had her first Perth experience when she went to the Channel Nine studio for a job interview. She was successful and is now the popular weather presenter on Nine news.

We asked her to take us around her new home town and show us some of her favourite places.

Fremantle

Just 30 minutes south of Perth, the port city of Fremantle has a vibrant mix of heritage charm, funky culture and cosmopolitan sophistication. It has the state's largest collection of heritage-listed 19th-century buildings.

Angela loves to meet friends at the main cappuccino strip, which is jam-packed with lively restaurants, boutiques and historical pubs. It reminds Angela of The Rocks in Sydney, so if she ever has pangs of homesickness she heads there.

There are seafood restaurants and the multicultural mix of Freo is evident in the amount of Italian, Asian, Indian and a host of other international cuisines. Weekend markets are really popular and offer fresh fruit and vegetables, stalls selling you-name-it and buskers entertaining.

Patisserie La Vespa

This place is easy to find in South Fremantle. You will see people coming and going with their purchases and many sitting at tables on the footpath tucking in to pies, sausage rolls, croissants, Danishes and other delicious pastries.

The building was once a butcher shop but is now run by mother and son, Judy and Jason. Jason is the on-site pastry chef and they are open for great food, pastries and coffee from 7am every day. The producer of Angela's story felt she should road test the sausage rolls. We're not sure why it took four before she gave a rating. Anyway, an outstanding 9.5 stars were eventually awarded.

Shopping

Fremantle is full of trendy boutiques for guys and girls. One of Angela's favourite places to give her credit card a work-out is Subway DC. They're only in Western Australia and stock an endless list of local and international designers' creations.

The Maritime Museum

Sitting on the edge of the Indian Ocean, the museum is symbolic of Fremantle's past, present and future as a coastal city and port. There are several galleries, leisure boats, handcrafted sailing boats and pearl luggers on view. It's home to Australia II, which won the America's Cup in 1983, and an Oberon class submarine.

It's a good spot to watch fishermen coming in with their catch and they're always ready for a chat.

Fremantle to Cottesloe Bike Path

Angela is an outdoors girl, and is usually one of the last to leave the beach in summer. During winter the Indian Ocean can be a little chilly and that's when she enjoys one of the many bike paths around Perth and beyond.

The path is a combination of purpose-built shared paths and local on-road links. It's about 20km and on a good day takes her about two to three hours of pedalling. Her favourite section is from Fremantle to Cottesloe. For those who don't wish to ride the entire route, it's okay to take your bicycle on the train.

After two years of living in the west, Angela is really feeling at home. Any minute she will be calling herself a true sandgroper!
